Here is a beginner’s guide so anyone can understand the different types of nutrients found in food and how they affect your body.

1. Protein

Protein is an essential nutrient that is vital for a healthy body. Every cell, including your skin and muscles, needs protein to survive and function properly. Protein is also the building block of all cells in your body. If you don’t have enough protein in your diet, your body will break down muscle tissue to produce the amino acids needed to survive. If you have too much protein in your system, this will increase the risk of kidney disease and osteoporosis.

There are two main types of protein: complete and incomplete proteins. Complete proteins contain all nine essential amino acids the human body requires for survival, while incomplete proteins do not contain all nine essential amino acids. The different types of food that can be eaten as complete proteins include meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy products, soy products, legumes and nuts.

2. Fats

Fats are another vital nutrient found in every cell of your body. There are two main types of fats: saturated and unsaturated. Saturated fats contain high amounts of saturated fatty acids and are usually found in animal products. Unsaturated fats contain high amounts of unsaturated fatty acids and are generally found in vegetable sources. The two main types of unsaturated fats are polyunsaturated (found in vegetable oils) and monounsaturated (found in foods such as avocados, nuts, and seeds).

3. Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are the next most important nutrient to the human body, after protein and fats. They are found in all sorts of foods, from vegetables and fruits to whole grains and pieces of bread. Carbohydrates provide energy (calories) by supplying the body with carbohydrates used for fuel. There are two main types of carbohydrates: simple and complex. Simple carbohydrates contain one or more sugars quickly absorbed into your system.

4. Alcohol

Alcohol is a liquid that comes from grains, fruits, or vegetables. It is made by fermenting starch from these substances. Alcoholic beverages include beer and wine. When you drink alcohol, the alcohol is broken down into acetaldehyde (a toxic substance) and carbon dioxide in your system. The acetaldehyde then combines with the alcohol to create acetic acid.
